The Hollow Veil

No map truly shows the Hollow Veil.

Cartographers draw its borders, scholars describe its landmarks, and explorers swear they have crossed it, yet every account differs in some crucial detail. Some claim the Veil lies deep beneath the oldest forests of Arnikeep. Others insist it exists partly outside ordinary reality, drifting between the physical world and whatever came before it.

All agree on one thing:

The Hollow Veil is where the world grows thin.

The first sign of entering the Veil is silence.

Not the absence of sound, but the disappearance of familiar sound. Birds cease singing. Leaves move without rustling. Footsteps become strangely muted, as though the forest floor is swallowing every vibration.

Travelers often describe the sensation as walking through a forgotten memory.

Light behaves strangely there. Sunbeams descend through the canopy in solid-looking columns of pale silver, lingering far longer than they should. At twilight, shadows stretch in impossible directions, sometimes leading away from their owners. More than one explorer has reported seeing their shadow continue walking after they stopped.

The trees themselves are enormous.

Ancient trunks rise hundreds of feet into the mist, their bark marked by glowing blue veins that pulse slowly like distant heartbeats. Their roots weave across the ground in vast networks, forming arches, tunnels, and entire roads older than recorded history. Some roots are so massive that villages could fit inside them.

No one knows whether the trees consume the energy of the Veil or generate it.

The scholars still argue.

Much of the Veil is covered in a faint luminous fog. During the day it glows with soft sapphire hues. At night it becomes brighter, illuminating the landscape with an eerie underwater radiance.

Within that fog move the Echo Beasts.

Some resemble deer made of starlight.

Others appear as wolves woven from blue flame.

There are glass-winged birds whose feathers ring like tiny bells, and pale foxes that leave trails of glowing symbols in the moss.

Most are harmless.

Most.

The Veil also contains creatures known as Remnants.

Remnants are not truly alive.

They are fragments of memories given form.

A traveler might encounter a phantom knight endlessly marching toward a battle that ended centuries ago. Another might meet a child chasing a wooden toy that no longer exists.

The Remnants repeat these moments forever, trapped in loops created by forces nobody fully understands.
