Chapter One
Can You Hear Me Running?
Ark Keeper · BigSkyChef.com Original Series
The voice first appeared in the silence between the footsteps.
Not spoken. Not heard.
Felt.
A faint vibration drifted through the ancient woods of Arnikeep, threading itself through the glowing roots and silver mist. Every creature in the forest paused. The luminous deer lifted their heads. The spectral foxes vanished into the ferns. Even the wind seemed to hesitate.
Then the voice came again.
"Can you hear me?"
The armored traveler stopped on the moss-covered path. Azure light pulsed along the seams of the metal plates, responding to the strange signal.
Ahead, the researcher carrying the crystal tablet froze as well.
"You felt it too," the researcher said quietly.
The traveler nodded.
Around them, the forest shimmered with bioluminescent vines older than recorded history. According to legend, these woods had grown around the ruins of the Ark, a lost structure said to predate both kingdoms and machines.
Many believed the stories were myths.
Others believed the Ark had once connected entire worlds.
Neither traveler was certain what to believe.
The researcher touched the floating holographic map above the tablet. Lines of blue light twisted across the display, rearranging themselves into a pattern that had not been there moments before.
A location.
Deep within the forbidden region known as the Hollow Veil.
The traveler frowned.
"That wasn't on the map before."
"It couldn't have been," the researcher replied. "The map is responding to the signal."
As if in answer, the voice returned.
Stronger this time.
"Can you hear me... running?"
The words echoed through the trees.
Every light in the forest dimmed.
Then, somewhere ahead, a brilliant column of silver energy erupted into the sky.
The ground trembled.
The holographic map flashed red.
A warning appeared in symbols neither traveler recognized.
Far beyond the trees, hidden beneath centuries of roots and stone, something ancient had awakened.
And for the first time in a thousand years, the Ark was calling someone by name.
The traveler's name.
Without knowing why, the traveler began moving toward the light.
The researcher followed.
Behind them, unnoticed in the darkness, dozens of glowing eyes opened.
And began to follow too.
To be continued...
