Chapter Six

The Golden Dwarves of St. Helena's Mountain

A Chronicle of the Dimensional Kingdoms

The Mountain Between Worlds

In the vast wilderness of Montana stands a peak known in legend as St. Helena's Mountain.

To ordinary men, it appears to be little more than a majestic mountain of stone, timber, snow, and ancient rivers.

Yet appearances are often deceiving.

For St. Helena's Mountain exists simultaneously in multiple dimensions.

Within the Third Dimension, the Kingdom of Man sees only forests, cliffs, and a swift river flowing from the mountain's heart. But in the Fourth Dimension, where unseen realms overlap the visible world, the mountain becomes something far greater.

It becomes the Citadel of the Golden Dwarves.

The River of the Bridge

The dwarves call the river flowing from the mountain the River of the Bridge.

Its waters are unlike any other river in creation. They flow not merely through space, but between dimensions themselves. Every droplet is said to carry echoes from neighboring realities.

To the dwarves, the River of the Bridge represents the eternal connection between worlds:

The Kingdom of Man in the Third Dimension — and the Kingdom of the Dwarves in the Fourth.

Where men see flowing water, the dwarves see shimmering gateways.

Where men see a riverbank, the dwarves see ports, roads, markets, and dimensional pathways leading into realms beyond imagination.

Aurelhold

Along the hidden banks of the River of the Bridge, the Golden Dwarves constructed what many believe to be the most beautiful city in the Lower Ten Dimensions.

The city is known as Aurelhold.

Its towers are forged from luminous metals unknown to men. Crystal bridges span glowing waterways. Great halls are carved from living stone that softly sings when touched by moonlight. Rivers of liquid gold illumination flow beneath transparent streets. Massive geometric structures bend space itself, appearing impossibly large on the inside while occupying only modest space externally.

To dwarven architects, beauty and engineering are one and the same.

Every structure serves a purpose.

Every purpose serves a greater design.

The Alliance with the Sons of Man

Because the Golden Dwarves possess mastery over higher-dimensional geometry, they can safely interact with the Third Dimension without disrupting it. They step between realities as easily as a human might cross a room.

This unique ability made them invaluable partners to the Sons of Man.

For centuries they secretly observed humanity's technological ambitions, especially mankind's desire to conquer the oceans.

None fascinated them more than submarines.

The dwarves admired the courage of sailors who willingly descended into the crushing darkness beneath the sea. They saw reflections of themselves in those crews living within steel vessels surrounded by an unforgiving environment.

Thus a remarkable alliance emerged.

The Dimensional Docking Chambers

Deep beneath remote stretches of ocean lay hidden Dimensional Docking Chambers — vast caverns partially existing in both the Third and Fourth Dimensions.

To human crews, these locations appeared as mysterious underwater facilities discovered by chance.

To the dwarves, they were ancient shipyards.

When damaged submarines drifted into these hidden docking spaces, dwarven engineers would emerge from shimmering dimensional gateways carrying tools fashioned from impossible alloys. Small in stature yet unmatched in craftsmanship, they worked alongside human sailors and engineers.

They strengthened hulls.

Refined propulsion systems.

Improved life-support machinery.

Repaired damage beyond conventional explanation.

Many a submarine returned to service with systems functioning better than when it first left the shipyard, its crew unable to fully explain how.

The Sleepers

The dwarves never sought recognition.

Creation itself was their reward.

Yet they remained deeply conflicted.

They admired mankind's ingenuity, courage, and determination.

But they feared humanity's appetite for war.

Within the Third Dimension, nations built increasingly powerful weapons. Devices capable of unimaginable destruction rested within the very submarines the dwarves helped maintain.

Weapons with the capacity to devastate entire cities.

Weapons capable of threatening the world itself.

The Golden Dwarves called such devices The Sleepers.

For they believed the destruction within them should remain asleep forever.

The Highest Mastery

The dwarves understood that power without wisdom was among the most dangerous forces in any dimension.

Thus they quietly encouraged humanity's better nature.

Whenever possible, they improved navigation, safety, rescue systems, and defensive technologies while refusing to advance those systems intended solely for destruction.

"The highest mastery of engineering," taught the Elder Smiths of Aurelhold, "is not the ability to destroy worlds. It is the ability to preserve them."

At the center of Aurelhold stands a great bridge spanning the radiant waters of the River of the Bridge. Upon its arch are inscribed the words:

Between every world lies a bridge.

Between every people lies understanding.

And between power and wisdom lies choice.

The Watch Continues

So the Golden Dwarves continue their watch from St. Helena's Mountain, maintaining their magnificent city in the Fourth Dimension, guiding travelers between worlds, and quietly assisting the Sons of Man beneath the oceans.

For they believe that one day humanity will mature beyond its weapons of war.

And when that day finally arrives, the River of the Bridge will no longer separate kingdoms.

It will unite them.
