Ark Keeper — World Lore
Chapter Four
The Four Major Clades
Scholars classify Echo Beasts into four known groups.
Lumens
Gentle · AmbientThe gentlest Echo Beasts.
Lumens include deer, rabbits, birds, and similar creatures.
They feed on ambient magical energy instead of plants or meat. Travelers frequently encounter them grazing in moonlit clearings, drawing pale light from flowers and moss.
A Lumen deer can stand motionless for hours while glowing roots slowly curl around its legs. By dawn, flowers often bloom wherever it walked.
Many villagers consider Lumens a sign of good fortune.
Emberfangs
Predatory · SentinelPredatory Echo Beasts.
These creatures resemble wolves, great cats, and hunting birds.
Their bodies burn with silent blue or violet fire that produces no heat. When running, they leave trails of floating sparks that linger in the air for several minutes.
Unlike ordinary predators, Emberfangs rarely hunt for food.
Instead they appear to hunt disturbances.
Aggressive intruders, reckless treasure seekers, and those who damage the Veil often become targets.
The beasts strike with terrifying speed, crossing entire clearings in a single leap before vanishing once more into the mist.
Whisperwings
Aerial · EncodedBird-like Echo Beasts that inhabit the upper canopy.
Their wings are composed of crystalline feathers that ring softly when they fly. Entire flocks can create music as they pass overhead.
Many researchers have recorded these sounds and discovered something remarkable.
The melodies contain patterns.
Some resemble mathematical formulas.
Others appear to be encoded maps.
A few have matched symbols found on Ark Fragments buried beneath the forest.
This has led many scholars to suspect that Whisperwings function as messengers within some ancient network.
What messages they carry remains unknown.
Mirrorborn
Shapeless · FearedThe rarest and most feared Echo Beasts.
Mirrorborn possess no stable shape.
A traveler might see a silver fox.
Another person, standing beside them, might see a black stag.
A third might see a winged serpent.
All would be observing the same creature.
Mirrorborn seem to manifest according to the memories and expectations of whoever looks at them.
Many legends portray them as the direct servants of the Ark.
Very few specimens have ever been observed.
Fewer still have survived close encounters.
Behavior
Echo Beasts communicate through resonance rather than spoken language.
Light pulses through their bodies, creating intricate patterns visible beneath their luminous skin. Other Echo Beasts respond with flashes of their own.
To ordinary observers, these signals resemble beautiful displays.
To specialists who have studied them, the patterns appear remarkably similar to data transmission.
The beasts may actually be exchanging information.
Information about travelers.
About changes in the Veil.
About the awakening Ark.
Strange Abilities
Every Echo Beast possesses unusual talents, but several abilities are especially famous.
Memory Echoes
An Echo Beast can accidentally project fragments of memory into nearby minds.
Someone approaching a glowing deer may suddenly experience a brief vision:
A forgotten battle.
An ancient city.
A conversation that occurred centuries ago.
The memory usually vanishes within seconds.
No one knows whether these memories belong to the beast itself or to something much older.
Phasewalking
Some Echo Beasts can briefly step outside normal reality.
Observers witness them dissolve into particles of light before reappearing elsewhere.
Because of this ability, hunters have never successfully trapped an adult Echo Beast.
Harmonic Healing
The presence of certain Lumens accelerates natural recovery.
Wounds close faster.
Plants flourish.
Water becomes clearer.
Entire Groves blessed by Lumen herds often become sacred sites.
Temporal Glimpses
The rarest ability.
Witnesses occasionally report seeing an Echo Beast appear moments before it actually arrives.
Others swear they watched one vanish before hearing its departing footsteps.
Whether the beasts manipulate time or merely perceive it differently remains unknown.
